CLUB LAND, set in 1958 New York, is a moving drama about an aging talent agent who is struggling to find his two-bit clients gigs while also trying to train his son to take over the business. Alan Alda (M*A*S*H) is terrific as Willie Walters, a mean-spirited, tough-as-nails old-timer who represents BROADWAY DANNY ROSE-like low-rent performers. Steven Weber (WINGS) plays his son, Stuey, a ne`er-do-well who constantly argues with his father over clients, money, and his dead mother, whom he dreams about in entrancing black-and-white flashbacks. When a major conflict develops with the agency`s top client, Lou Montana (Brad Garrett), tempers flare between father and son, creating a rift that might never heal. Weber wrote the screenplay for CLUB LAND, based on his grandfather`s experiences training his own son to become an agent. Thus, Weber gets the rare chance to portray a character based on his own father. Saul Rubinek, perhaps best known for his excellent performances in such films as UNFORGIVEN, THE CONTENDER, and TICKET TO HEAVEN, directs with a deft touch, taking the viewer behind the scenes to see what goes on backstage at comedy clubs, with all their wheeling and dealing and shady, slimy characters. But Eugene Levy steals the show with his soliloquy on the great kugel famine through which he suffered with his family.
