The city of Cologne and the Cologne Philharmonic host this program of music by two of the 20th century`s most prominent and influential composers. Segei Prokofiev is, of course, one of the most well known Russian composers of the modern era. Perhaps best known for his ballets as well as his seminal children`s work, PETER AND THE WOLF, Prokofiev`s music is both sophisticated and acerbic, and was instrumental in paving the way for later composers. Rautavaara, the Finnish composer, came to prominence in the 1960s for his striking Neo-Romantic works that ran the gamut from opera to solo work. Here, Sakari Oramo conducts the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in performances of: Rautavaara`s Isle of Bliss, Prokofiev`s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Op. 26 with Olli Mustonen as the soloist, Sibelius` Symphony No. 5 in E flat Op. 82 and also, as an encore, the composer`s Valse Triste Op. 44.
