Indie director Dave Markey (1991: THE YEAR PUNK BROKE) created this satirically melodramatic expose of the search for musical fame in 1984 with the help of a handful of several L.A. underground rock stars (Steve and Jeff McDonald of Redd Kross, Dez Cadena of Black Flag). Hilary Rubens, Jennifer Schwartz, and Janet Housden portray Bunny, Kitty, and Patch, three runaways who form The Lovedolls, an all-girl rock band. Their low-rent, druggy beginnings give rise to fame thanks to their sleazy manager (Steve McDonald), but the girls run into trouble, thanks to brutal girl gang, the She-Devils, and their fierce leader, Tanya Hearst. DESPERATE TEENAGE LOVEDOLLS is a prime example of guerilla filmmaking and a valuable document of the early 1980s L.A. punk scene.
