Washington, D.C. hardcore punk band Fugazi are the true innovators who are revered by young iconoclasts everywhere. Vocalist-guitarist Ian MacKaye, who also fronted the seminal punk band Minor Threat, is an ideological hero to many--his anti-major label stance and belief in a DIY, independent music scene continues to be an inspiration. Since their formation in 1987, Fugazi`s remarkable career has been tracked on film by photographer-turned-filmmaker Jem Cohen, himself part of the local punk scene. INSTRUMENT is a collection of Cohen and Fugazi`s audiovisual collaborations; shot over a period of 10 years on Super 8, 16mm, and video, the film is a visually stunning compilation of concerts, landscapes, interviews, and studio footage.
