Three classic World War II films are presented here: GUNG HO is the story of a group of Army Rangers assembled for a dangerous raid on a Japanese-held island. This tough-minded action film features harrowing battle scenes. GO FOR BROKE is the story of the Nisei soldiers, Japanese-Americans who joined the American armed forces despite facing prejudice and discrimination. THE IMMORTAL BATTALION, titled THE WAY AHEAD in Britain, features the formation of an army squadron and their trek to the battles of North Africa.
GUNG HO: A special group picked from the toughest men in the marines are enlisted with the mission to recapture Makin-a Key, an island in the Pacific war zone in World War II. Hollywood hero tough guy Randolph Scott stars as their commander, Col. Thorwald, and the film also stars Robert Mitchum. The men from all different walks of American life band together and must succeed in their mission. They were eventually given the moniker `Carlson`s Raiders.`
GO FOR BROKE: The 442nd Regiment, comprised of Nisei - loyal Americans of Japanese ancestry - exhibits heroism far beyond the call of duty, overcoming the Nazis as well as the extreme prejudice of white Americans who cannot accept Japs on their side. Van Johnson plays one of those bigots. Academy Award Nominations: Best Story and Screenplay.
THE IMMORTAL BATTALION: Boasting a script by Eric Ambler and Peter Ustinov, THE IMMORTAL BATTALION is a rousing version of a familiar WWII genre: An officer must hammer a small group of disparate characters into an effective fighting unit as quickly as possible. David Niven stars as tough-minded Lieutenant Jim Perry, putting a reluctant and sometimes comically inept group of raw recruits through fantastically realistic basic-training exercises. When the troops hit the beaches of North Africa, they finally begin to understand the purpose behind their training. This is the truncated version of the film also known as THE WAY AHEAD.
