In Karel Reisz`s MORGAN! the wildly eccentric artist of the title (played with lunatic delight by David Warner) is driven over the edge when his ex-wife, Leonie (Vanessa Redgrave in her wickedly innocent film debut), with whom he is still smitten, announces that she plans to remarry. The wildly manic Morgan (King Kong is his idol) desperately tries to win Leonie back from her very normal fiance Charles Napier (Robert Stephens). Morgan begins by living in his ex-wife`s car outside her apartment, then hires a wrestler to kidnap her. Leonie now steps up, firmly telling Morgan that their relationship is over and that she wants a normal life with Napier. The confrontation, naturally, leads to passionate sex between Morgan and his ex-wife. Morgan is also being driven mad by the other woman in his life, his mother, (Irene Handl), a Trotskyite who sincerely believes that her son will be taking over the country. But even she is not blind to his mental problems. MORGAN! is a delirious comedy about the artist representing the id in all of us with a lead character who allows himself to be as insane and irrational as possible, right down to his running amok in a gorilla costume.
