Co-directed with surrealist master Luis Bunuel, Epstein combines elements of a number of Poe`s writings to created a melancholy and chilling feature. Roderick Usher is a painter working feverishly to finish a painting of his sick wife Madeline, who becomes more exhausted with each sitting. His friend Allan arrives to comfort the couple but Madeline dies shortly after. Soon Roderick himself succumbs to the wasting, all while strange noises have begun issuing from Madeline`s tomb.
