Plato Mavoski (Vladimir Mashkov) is the Russian government`s worst nightmare. While still a brilliant young academic, he encourages four of his friends to set aside their studies and join him in a variety of business schemes beginning in the late 1980s. Mavoski`s semi-legal enterprises make him not only the richest man in Russia, but quite possibly the country`s most powerful man as well, not to mention a target for Russian secret service officers and other numerous enemies. Fortunes are amassed, corruption is rampant, and political careers are made and lost during Mavoski`s rise to wealth and power, which is depicted via flashbacks of the past 15 years as Mavoski is investigated by an inspector, Chmakov (Andrei Krasko). Mashkov is riveting as Mavoski, an idealist who is consumed by greed and power, ultimately left questioning if there is anyone he can trust. Co-written and directed by Pavel Lounguine (THE WEDDING, THE LIFE IN RED), TYCOON was adapted from the novel THE BIG SLICE by Yuli Dubov, which was reportedly based on the life of Russian oligarch and expatriate Boris Berezovsky.
