In this unconventional narrative film, director Nicholas Roeg sees the life of civilization as arid and unrewarding. Abandoned in the Australian outback, three young travellers survive because of an Aborigine`s skills. Communication is a problem, although more for the girl than for her little brother, who still has a child`s ability to cut straight through the language to the message. The two teenagers, the girl and an aborigine, fail because they never find a way to communicate, not even through sign language. A commentary on pastoral simplicity versus cosmopolitan clutter, this haunting film marked Nicholas Roeg`s directorial debut. Based on the novel by James Vance Marshall.
