Director Mike Leigh strikes again with WHO'S WHO, a documentary-like expose of the employees of an elite London brokerage firm. Alan (Richard Kane) is a fanatic of English history who collects letters from important government officials, while his wife, April (Joolia Cappleman), is an obscenely sincere cat lover. Giles (Adam Norton) and Nigel (Simon Chandler) are snooty, over-privileged stockbrokers who also happen to be roommates. One evening, while April has invited over a photographer to capture her felines on film, as well as sell one off to a wealthy woman, Giles and Nigel have arranged a dinner party in their flat. The guests include their coworker, Anthony (Graham Seed), the shy and pretty Caroline (Felicity Dean), and the free-spirited Samantha (Catherine Hall), whose appreciation for the punk rock mentality sparks friction at the dinner table. As Leigh does with all of his films, he establishes a distinct set of characters, then brings them together in a way that condemns England's rigid class structures, while maintaining a comical air that keeps the story poignant and entertaining at the same time. Allowing his actors the freedom to create their own characters, Leigh's film has the freshness and spontaneity of day-to-day life behind closed doors.
